Your documentary sounds fascinating, and I wish I had a place to recommend to you, but I've really only been to the park a handful of times. In truth, when I think of prehistoric forests, I think of somewhere like Muir Woods above San Francisco. That said, I'd encourage you to contact the ranger/visitor center of Croatan National Forest, as in my experience, most Federal rangers are more than happy to help anyone who's interested in the area they're managing.
